I have a scooter that is red and awesome! Monday at work Cody, a friend, told me about the bell on his motorcycle. It is a tiny bell, shaped like a church bell. “The bell sucks up all the road demons”, Cody said. I thought this was a story he was feeding me, and don’t believe in objects holding any power. I teased him and said “What if I just make sure to look around a lot, and not get in an accident?” He told me that I needed a bell, and that no one could buy the bell for themselves it had to be given by another biker. I laughed some more and let it go.
On Tuesday I continued to investigate the road demon bell and asked my old boss about it, “Why do grown men put little bells on their bicycles?” Trying to be totally cynical and funny. He gave me same story I had received from Cody. I continued to criticize the idea of giving a bell power and that it is foolish to believe in demons.
On my way home from work Tuesday I needed to stop and put gas in my scooter. As I was turning into the gas station I noticed a small puddle at the last moment. Somehow I hit the puddle and the lip of the curb at the exact same time, and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground. I didn’t even know I was falling until I was on the ground. Don’t worry I am not seriously injured (other than my pride) I scraped my knee and have a hole in a great pair of slacks, but I will live. I had two people come up to make sure that I was okay and that I was not bleeding (thank God for kind, good hearted, strangers). I was wearing my helmet (like always) and there was not a scratch on it. My scooter has only cosmetic damage; the side front fender is scraped. I don’t like falling.
On Wednesday when I was telling this story to the old boss I realized that I teased the road demons and they got me back! I hate superstitions, and only believe that things have power if I give them power. But man was it weird to be making fun of fake road demons and 3 hours later falling off my scooter. So now regardless of my prior feelings, I NEED a road demon bell. (I think work is getting me one)
